About the Salisbury Hospice

We provide high-quality, specialist care and support for people facing terminal and advanced, progressive illness.

Many of our patients do have cancer but some have other long-term conditions, such as chronic lung disease, motor neurone disease and heart failure.

We can offer:

nursing and medical care
emotional and practical support
welfare advice
occupational therapy and physiotherapy
complementary therapies
spiritual care
creative activities.

These services are provided entirely free of charge to patients and their families.

'I qualified from medical school at the University of Edinburgh in 1997, and after initially working in Scotland made my way South including 16 months working as the doctor (and occasionally token dentist) for the British Antarctic Survey in the Southern Ocean and Antarctic! I undertook my Specialist Palliative Medicine training in Wessex and joined the Salisbury Specialist Palliative Care Team as a consultant in 2011. I have postgraduate qualifications in remote healthcare and medical education and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2015.

As well as being lead consultant for the service I am also clinical lead for End of Life Care at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust and until recently Training Programme Director for specialty training in Wessex. I mainly work in the acute hospital, supporting patients with palliative care needs.

Karen has worked in specialist palliative care since the year 2000 when she was successful in securing a Specialist Palliative Care Hospital Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) development post at Winchester Hospital, she then moved to the east of Hampshire and was based at the Rowans Hospice for 11 years working for Southern Health NHS as a Community CNS in Specialist Palliative Care.

Directions to The Hospice

By Public Transport

There is a regular bus service (Salisbury Reds) from Salisbury city centre (Stop O in Blue Bear Row on the north side of the market square). The journey to Salisbury District Hospital takes approximately ten minutes. The buses run in an anti-clockwise direction around the hospital site but visitors to the hospice should get off at The Green. There is a covered walkway leading directly to the hospice, which is signposted.

By Car

Visitors should enter the hospital site at Entrance B, take the first right and follow the signs to the hospice where there are five dedicated parking spaces (car park 12). The hospice reception will issue a permit. There is also alternative car parking at car park 15.
