Salisbury Hospice Charity would like to say a huge thank you to Bish Jones who raised £2,998.00 as a result of her cycling challenge in Sri Lanka earlier this year.
Bish, who loves a challenge, was originally booked on the Mont Blanc trek which had to be rescheduled several times due to the pandemic. Not to be deterred by changing dates, Bish decided to do the Sri Lanka Challenge instead.
Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, is an island renowned for its natural beauty and wildlife, fascinating culture and beautiful beaches. The diverse, hilly route traversed the central highlands from west coast to south, linking cultural highlights and National Parks.
From tropical lowlands, the group rode through forested valleys and small villages up into the tea estates and cloud-forest of the Central Highlands, before descending to the southern plains and the coast. Barely a mile went by without something to divert the cyclists – the ever-changing views, remote temples, friendly villages, roadside stalls selling fresh coconut, monkeys in the trees … even the rare, unforgettable experience of cycling past elephants!
The group started their challenge in Negombo and cycled through to Tangalle, with distances ranging between 50 and 120km per day, and hot and humid conditions.
Bish, who did the challenge in memory of her husband Lyndon who passed away in Salisbury Hospice, said: “My take away was feeling humbled by the lovey kind, gentle and smiley people we met who never failed to make us feel welcome. Including those who had very little and lived in mud huts. And the beauty of the country- absolutely stunning.”
Thank you Bish and congratulations on completing the challenge and raising such a wonderful amount which will go towards making a difference in the Hospice.
